Major Equipment Required Per Group

 

The labs are set up for students to work in groups of 4. Each group requires:

 

  • Amscope Inverted Microscope with 3MP Camera (IN300TC-3M) ~ $2100
    (Other models are possible, but the general requirement is Digital imaging capability and sufficient magnification and illumination quality to see 1 micron beads) 
  • Red Tide Education Spectrometer (USB-650) ~ $1300
    (Other models are possible, but the general requirement is computer interface and wavelength range including the near IR and UV)
  • 1-2 Desktop computers ~ $500 - $1000
  • Vernier Lab Pro with Voltage Probe ~ $225
  • Webcam with 30 FPS capability
    (We use a 2 MP Logitech Webcam that has since been replaced with a newer model. ~ $40)

 

Total ~ $4700 per group

    • ~20 ball bearings each of 4 different densities – We use McMaster-Carr ball bearings
    • ~100 basket-style coffee filters
    • 1 meter stick with stand per group
  • Lab 3 (two weeks)
    • VWR Micro Slides
    • Micropipettes with tips for Student Use – We use Accumax Jr. Mini Pipettes
  • Lab 4 (two weeks)
    • Lab-Tek 8 Well Chamber Slide
    • Disposable 1mL Pipettes
    • 1 Stand per group to tilt Microscopes
