Major Equipment Required Per Group
The labs are set up for students to work in groups of 4. Each group requires:
- Amscope Inverted Microscope with 3MP Camera (IN300TC-3M) ~ $2100
(Other models are possible, but the general requirement is Digital imaging capability and sufficient magnification and illumination quality to see 1 micron beads)
- Red Tide Education Spectrometer (USB-650) ~ $1300
(Other models are possible, but the general requirement is computer interface and wavelength range including the near IR and UV)
- 1-2 Desktop computers ~ $500 - $1000
- Vernier Lab Pro with Voltage Probe ~ $225
- Webcam with 30 FPS capability
(We use a 2 MP Logitech Webcam that has since been replaced with a newer model. ~ $40)

- VWR Micropipette Starter Set ~ $800
- VWR 15 mL Centrifuge Tubes~ $20
- VWR 50 mL Centrifuge Tubes~ $20
- 1.5 mL Microcentrifuge Tubes for student distribution~ $20
- Distilled Water
- Bangs Laboratories Microspheres ~ $200 each
- 1 µm Silica (SS04N)
- 2 µm Silica (SS06N)
- 5 µm Silica (SS04N)
- 2 µm PolyStyrene (PS05N)

Lab Equipment and Materials for specific labs
First semester
- Lab 1 (one week)
- Relies on existing video: ImageJ and Excel needed.
- Lab 2 (two weeks)
- 12 Clear 2L Graduated Cylinders
- ~20 ball bearings each of 4 different densities – We use McMaster-Carr ball bearings
- ~100 basket-style coffee filters
- 1 meter stick with stand per group
- Lab 3 (two weeks)
- VWR Micro Slides
- Micropipettes with tips for Student Use – We use Accumax Jr. Mini Pipettes
- Lab 4 (two weeks)
- Lab-Tek 8 Well Chamber Slide
- Disposable 1mL Pipettes
- 1 Stand per group to tilt Microscopes
- Lab 5
- Onions, preferably Vidalia
- VMR Micro Slides
- VMR Micro Cover Glass

Second semester
