Potential Modules or Threads

We intend this course material to serve both as a full two-semester physics course for biology majors or as structured materials that can be used in conjunction with existing physics courses. We refer to the latter as modules or threads.

  • Modules are localized units intended to be used in a limited amount of time -- a class period, a correlated lab, lecture, and homework, or a week of instruction.
  • Threads are sets of correlated instructional materials that weave through multiple topics and supplement other instruction. There may be readings, clicker questions, and problems that appear through an entire semester adding a new coherent angle to more traditional instruction.

These units will be in development throughout the project. The pages below list to potential topics for modules or threads and link to materials in development. If you have interest in contributing to or using some of these materials contact Joe Redish (redish@umd.edu) or Kaci Thompson (kaci@umd.edu).

What is the relationship between "threads" and "competencies"? Some threads seem to develop a competency (e.g. mathematical modeling and conceptual coherence around chemical energy). Others just seem topic driven (e.g action potentials). But maybe they just need to be renamed. On closer inspection action potential seems to be about developing some coherence around ideas related to electricity. Perhaps we need to get more specific about what a thread is supposed to do. To me it would make sense to define a thread in terms of the competency it is meant to develop.

Hmm Ok this comment makes no sense given the Competency Table for the Energy Thread. But somehow it seems like the thread is building a MAIN competency around energy coherence and along the way it happens to be tapping in to other competencies we care about.
