Consider the two circuit diagrams below. Note that there are four missing circuit elements (A, B, C, D) and eight circuit elements (1-8) you can use to complete the circuits. Read the directions carefully! The eight circuit elements are: two 5 microfarad capacitors connected in series, one perfect voltmeter, one perfect ammeter, one pair of 10 ohm resistors connected in parallel, one 20 volt battery, and one 20 ohm light bulb, a wire and a switch.

 

 


 

A. The circuit on the left has a 20 volt battery and two boxes (and B) waiting for your circuit elements. There is a perfect voltmeter connected to the wires leading to the two ends of any circuit element found in box B.

 

A.1 Identify three circuit elements that could be found in A and B if there were zero current flowing through Point Q.

 

A.2 if the capacitors (element 1) were in box A and the current through Point Q equaled one ampere, which element would have to be found in box B?

 

A.3 What ΔV would the voltmeter attached to B measure?

 

B. The circuit on the right has a 20 volt battery and two boxes (and D) waiting for your circuit elements. There is a perfect voltmeter connected to the wires leading to the two ends of any circuit element found in box C.

 

B.1 If the bulb (element 6) were placed in box C, which element would you place in box D to make the bulb burn as brightly as possible?

 

B.2 How many watts would the bulb dissipate?

 

B.3 If the current through Point R equaled 4 Amps, identify all the possible circuit elements that could be found in C and D.

 

B.4 Assume box C has element 3 and box D has element 4. What value of ΔV does the voltmeter measure?
