Reminders from 11-08 TA Training

Page history last edited by Kim Moore 10 years, 5 months ago

Hello!

I hope you are having a lovely weekend. :-)

Here are the reminders/links that I said I would send.  I have also emailed all the students in both courses to remind them to do the readings in preparation for this week's recitation and lab (and to give them the Random Motion Survey link, in case they haven't filled it out yet....).

1. Recitation:

Hold the Mayo:  http://umdberg.pbworks.com/w/file/61771177/Hold%20the%20mayo.pdf

Estimating Capillaries: http://umdberg.pbworks.com/w/page/49226533/Estimating%20capillaries

**Please give an intro to this recitation that frames the activity.  (E.g., Recitation and Lab are OFTEN ahead of the lecture.  The goal of a recitation/lab is NOT to recap what has been seen in lecture, but to explore a concept and bring in your outside knowledge (from Bio/Chem) to help you understand a new idea.  There is METHOD to our 'madness'!  Different learning styles will benefit from seeing an idea in lecture first, others from seeing an idea in recitation first.  Regardless, the READINGS are the first exposure to all ideas seen in this course, so in that sense both lecture and recitation are a 'recitation' (repeated exposure) of an idea.)

To help with these ideas, read/review the following links:

(Break)--Pass back graded Lab 3, if you have not yet done so....

2. Lab 4, Part 2:

Documents at: http://umdberg.pbworks.com/w/page/68933700/NEXUS%20Physics%20Labs%2C%202013-2014

a) Decide what you want to see in the reports and clearly communicate this to students. (Let them know the 'minimum' required elements in that you will be looking for when you grade.)

b) Make sure that all groups work through the mathematical modeling to gain an understanding of how/why the slopes of log-log plots are different for different types of motion.

c) There should be plenty of time for group presentations/posters.  Try doing a different style for this lab than you did for the last lab.

d) Don't forget to collect the lab reports before the students leave.  Please check the paper level and staple level before you leave the lab--extra staples and reams of paper can be gotten from Bill Norwood (office across the hall from 3310).  Stock up to make the next TA's job easier.

e) Spare students documents (lab and recitation) are in the center, back cabinet.

3. Other Logistics:

a)  Don't forget to send me (& the profs) your rubrics and spreadsheets ASAP.  I need the Losert exams by 8:30am on Monday.  I need the Redish exams by noon on Tuesday.

b) Thanks to James for bringing us cupcakes and doughnut holes.  Who would like to volunteer to bring us snacks this Friday (Nov. 15th)??

Let me know if you have any questions/concerns!

~KIM
