IRB Training

How do I get linked to a project's IRB?

What is IRB anyway and why do I need to worry about it?

From the University of Maryland IRB homepage: An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee designated by an institution to help assure the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects. The IRB approves the initiation of and conducts periodic reviews of research involving human subjects. Investigators also share the responsibility for protecting human subjects.

What training do I need to do?

For most of the research we do with BERG, you must complete Human Subjects Research training. Most institutions use CITI training for this, and the University of Maryland is no exception. You an find the link to the training here on the UMD webpage. If this is your first time to a project you'll need to complete the "Initial Course." If you're returning for your 3-year expiration then you'll run through the "Refresher" course. In either case make sure you save your completion report when you're finished.

Training is done, how do I link to the project?

First thing you'l need to do is create an account on irbnet.org. This is really quite simple. Follow the steps for registration, you'll get an e-mail confirmation and you follow the link to activate the account. Now you need to link your training to your account. UMD has some pretty simple steps outlined for this process here.

Congrats! You're done. Now just let your contact person with the project know that you've completed all these pieces and you'll be added to the project!
