Spring 2015 Phys 131 Reminder from 5-01--SURVEYS and MU Lab Info

Page history last edited by Kim Moore 8 years, 11 months ago

Hello, Phys 131 TAs & LAs!

Here is the email that we promised you, recapping our Friday discussions about the Make-up Lab and including links to surveys and a sample email to send to your students.  Please remember to have all of your lab and recitation/lab participation scores entered into ELMS by Wednesday, May 13th.  I need all of the scores so that the professors and I can renormalize the lab grades.  If you cannot enter your lab scores in this time frame, email me ASAP.  Also, if you have any rubrics or notes you have made for teaching these recitations/labs that you would like to share, I'd be happy to add these to our growing data collection.

1) This week in lab/recitation:

[Do the FMCE Survey ONLY and BEFORE Recitation, if giving the Surveys during the week of May 4th....]

Link to recitation for 5/11-12: Temperature regulation - 2013 revision

(Please encourage the students to work collaboratively, using the whiteboards and markers. The recitation papers are on the printer table at the back of the room.)

(Break.... Pass back graded Lab 5!)

Outline for "lab" time:  (Some student will be doing the make-up lab instead, see next section....)

(There is no login info for the computers. If a computer is 'logged out,' simply turn it off and reboot the computer. It will automatically login.)

2) Surveys (for ALL students)--Students should take these surveys in the listed/following order (URL's on the blackboard, or send your students the sample email with links at the end of this message).  It is best if students take these surveys in the lab/recitation room (rather than at home)--but if there is not enough time (i.e., if these surveys are sandwiched between the recitation and Lab 5, Part 2 during the week of 5/04), then students should only complete the FMCE scantron/paper-based survey (the other surveys are on-line and can be completed from somewhere else/at home).  The TinyURL is easier to type.  In case it isn't working (we have had trouble in the past), I have also included the direct link to the Qualtrics survey.   [Do the FMCE ONLY and BEFORE Recitation, if giving the Surveys during the week of May 4th....]

Surveys i - ii are NEW (not previously emailed) and iii - vi are REMINDERS to complete electronic/on-line surveys already emailed to the students.

i) End-of-Course (End-of-Term) Survey for Physics 131:

This is an ELECTRONIC / ON-LINE survey.

qualtrics direct:   https://umdsurvey.umd.edu/SE/?SID=SV_9GoOr3JvKi9rRFr

ii) Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE) Survey (paper-based)

Scantron instructions to students:

These surveys are not graded for accuracy.

These question booklets must stay in the room.  Please do not make any marks on the question booklet (put all marks and answers on the scantron sheet).

Use a #2 pencil only.  If you do not have one, there are some in the lab room (by the printer, at the back of the room) that you may borrow.  Please return the pencil when you are done.

On your scantron sheets, please write your NAME, your UMD Student ID# (in the identification box), and the appropriate code (####, where #### are the full digits of your section. E.g., section 0203 taking the FMCE will code this as 0203.)

Other TA notes: Please place the used scantron sheets/paper surveys in the appropriate box.  Re-collect pencils and question booklets when the students are finished.

iii) E-CLASS Survey: (HALF of the students were emailed this survey--all Peel students, 020X sections)

tinyurl:   http://tinyurl.com/Phys131-Spring2015-ECLASS-Post

qualtrics direct:   https://cuboulder.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_b8YTev8gM271kfX

iv) MPEX Survey: (The OTHER HALF of the students were emailed this survey--all Dreyfus students, 010X sections)

v) PIB Survey (all students were emailed this survey)

vi) UMD Course Eval (students have access to this via UMD)

3) Make-up Lab: Ants and Slime Molds

Link: NEXUS Physics Labs, 2013-2014

The videos for this lab have all been loaded onto the "My Documents" folder of the computers in the front of the room (by the TA desk/fridge).  I will try to load the videos onto the other computers, too, but this may not be in place early in the week.  The videos are also available on the NEXUS/Physics lab page linked above (listed as Physics 131 Make-up lab, halfway down the page, after Lab 5 and before Lab 6).

Remember that students should pick ONE of the scenarios (Ants or Slime Molds) and analyze that scenario both qualitatively and quantitatively.  Students have two hours to do the entire experiment and write their report.  (If 6 students are present, split them into two groups of 3.  If 4 or 5 students are present, have them work as a single group.)

If students make a presentation of their work to you (or to you and the other make-up lab group), then feel free to challenge them with questions and base the majority of your grade on this presentation (but still have them write the report and give it a cursory glance).  This lab report is scored out of 15 points and there is a column in ELMS for entering these grades.  Students also earn 3 participation points for this lab--add these to the points they have got in the Recitation/Lab Participation column for the "temperature regulation" recitation in ELMS.  This means that a kid doing the make-up lab could earn extra points for participation this coming week, above what the column in ELMS says it is worth--that's perfectly okay.  Please bring the report to me in 1322 to scan and I will get it right back to you.  All make-up lab grades need to be in ELMS by noon on Wednesday, May 13th.

If you have questions, ask me.

4) Example email to send to students with necessary links to on-line/electronic surveys:

I have not sent the survey links to the students yet, primarily because research has shown that student responses are more accurate when they complete the survey in the educational setting/environment/classroom.  With these online surveys, there is a danger that the students will complete the survey as soon as it is sent to them--likely well before they reach the lab/recitation room.  So, I suggest the following:
At the start of each recitation, send an email to your students with the survey links included.  Below is an example of such an email, which you can feel free to copy-paste and send to your students (via ELMS or the UMEG course-reflector).

[Greetings, Phys 131 students!

We have some end-of-the-course surveys for you to complete today....

These surveys are for PARTICIPATION credit--each survey must be completed in order to earn credit for that survey.  Responses to the surveys will not be seen by professors until after the course grades for Physics 131 have been assigned or by TAs until after the course grades for Physics 132 (i.e., after you have left this course sequence).    Only the research team will see students' names--all data will be anonymized before professors or TAs see the results.  These surveys should take a total of 60-75 minutes to complete and should be completed in the lab/recitation room.  Please work individually (no collaboration or discussion).  Please complete the surveys in the listed order.  Please provide honest, constructive feedback.  If any links are not functioning, please inform your TA immediately.

ii) Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE) Survey

This is a PAPER survey.  You must attend the start of  a 'lab' section time to complete this.

iii) E-CLASS Survey: (HALF of the students were emailed this survey--all Peel students, 020X sections)

vi) MPEX Survey: (The OTHER HALF of the students were emailed this survey--the link is in your email--all Dreyfus students, 010X sections)

vii) PIB Survey (all students were emailed this survey--the link is in your email)

viii) UMD Course Eval (students have access to this via UMD).

Thanks for your thoughtful and helpful feedback! ]

That should be everything for now. Please send me or your Head TA (John Biddle) an email if you have questions, need clarification, or have thought of something I have missed!

Good luck!
